An appellate court is a higher court that reviews decisions made by another court. Appellate courts are necessary for due process (i.e. procedural fairness in dispute resolution).
Appellate courts typically do not retry cases or consider new evidence. Instead, they determine whether the lower court applied the law correctly and conducted fair proceedings.
Appellate courts play an important role in dispute resolution. They give people a chance to review an unfavorable or unfair court outcome.
