We exclude our opinions and preferences from the messaging
Personal opinions or preferences are irrelevant when considering how to apply the Legal Principle. Instead, we follow the formula.
The ability to respect the rights of others, even when we disagree, is the highest expression of a 3L attitude. This is the way Live and Let Live promotes communication.
In fact, the clearest way to advocate in the interests of a Live and Let Live world is to defend a competent adult’s right to engage in activities we personally find immoral, unhealthy, unwise, unwarranted, foolish, or even disgusting.
Advocating for an individual’s legal right to behave in ways that may harm themselves, like eating an ice cream or saying something prejudiced, is not an endorsement.
Our political discourse needs to evolve so we can recognize and value the vital difference between how the law should apply and our unrelated personal opinions and preferences dictate.
